After Easter – What Now?

Much can be said about what Easter means. But what it means to us after Easter is just as important as what Easter has brought us through Christ’s sacrifice and victory over the grave.

What about living for Christ on this side of Easter? WHAT NOW? When Jesus was leaving Earth to take His rightful place in Heaven, He said, “Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live.” (John 16:5-7)

So how do we do life this side of Heaven? How does Jesus come to us? Because of Easter and through the Comforter (Holy Spirit), Jesus brings us four things that we continue to need:

1) WE HAVE HIS PRESENCE TO SURROUND US.

There is never a time that He is not available. Jesus said, “Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) When someone is alive, they are still with you. Because He lives, He remains our partner, companion, daily instructor and friend.

There are great spiritual and ethical leaders who have made promises to their followers throughout history – but there is one thing they all have in common – they are all dead. Their followers can read their ideas and perhaps implement them, but they are not PRESENT to walk and converse with on a daily basis.

But you can go to the tomb where Jesus was buried and find He is not there… HE IS RISEN. That’s what makes Him different – ALIVE, “seated at the right hand of the throne of God, making intercession for us,” just as He promised. (Hebrews 13:5)

2) WE HAVE HIS PEACE TO SECURE US.

Jesus made this promise for all time: “I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give you is a gift the world cannot give you. So, don’t be troubled or be afraid.” (John 14:27)

The one thing the disciples were lacking is the one thing only Jesus could give them… His offer was peace. Peace is a commodity that this world can’t give to us. We can’t buy it or purchase it; it simply is not for sale. But when we go to Him, we encounter a Risen Savior who is called the “Prince of peace.”

His peace is a security that will hold us when there is no way to understand our trials or why. His peace is for the asking. His Word promises, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed upon You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

3) WE HAVE HIS POWER TO STRENGTHEN US.

There are moments when we feel we can barely stand. We need a power that is far above our own. Isaiah reminds us, “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless." (Isaiah 40:29-31)

Difficulties and tragedies drain us, and we wonder where God is. They lessen our abilities to rise above the storms until our minds calm down and the storm subsides. When this happens and we feel weak, we need to acknowledge Him because He sees the big picture.

We need to put today and tomorrow in His capable hands. He’ll give strength for the journey ahead with more power than any human could ever imagine. This power is promised to us, and we need to receive it!

4) WE HAVE HIS HOPE TO STABILIZE US.

Life throws a lot of curves our way, and our spiritual foundation may at times seem shaky. What is it that settles us and gives us security? It is God’s promise of hope. “Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” (Hebrews 6:18-19)

God is not like the voices of this world, who make their flimsy promises and, while their lips are still moving, we wonder if they are lying again. We know God keeps His Word. We have HOPE on our side because of Him.

For certain, life is unpredictable, but nothing catches God by surprise. We have joys, sorrows, disappointments and blessings. But in those moments of unexpected difficulty, when life’s plans and dreams change in a moment, we know we can cope because God has promised us:

His PRESENCE to surround us; His PEACE to secure us; His POWER to strengthen us; and His HOPE to stabilize us.

Thank God for the promises of Easter…then and now!

What Happens After the Miracle?

As we approach Easter, remember you are not alone. Our miraculous Jesus is moving in your life today!

As a church, over these past seven weeks, we have walked through the miracles of Jesus from the book of John. And we’ve met some new friends along the way – servants from a wedding, a father and his family, a paralyzed man at a public pool, thousands at a picnic, the disciples in a boat, a blind man and hundreds of witnesses, and Lazarus who Jesus raised from the dead.

We got to share in the experience with these that were given a miracle. But have you ever stopped and wondered what happened to these people after the miracle? We aren’t privy to this information in Scripture (besides Lazarus), but what we do know is that Jesus performed these incredible miracles for a divine purpose.

What’s the purpose?

When Jesus began his public ministry, it often involved miracles. These miracles recorded in John were a progression toward reaching more and more people. Remember, a miracle is an unexpected outpouring of God’s power that defies our ordinary explanation, which occurs for the purpose of advancing God’s Kingdom.

The purpose of these miracles, yes fueled by Jesus’ compassion, was for the purpose of bringing heaven to earth. The only way that could happen was for Jesus to fulfill His purpose on earth to save…which required resurrection power…which required His death.

As we near Easter, I think we can miss the events leading up to that day of celebration.

So, for a moment, could we remember our new friends who experienced those miracles and walk in their ancient shoes? Maybe we will see something we once missed.

First, let’s think about the triumphal entry, or Palm Sunday, which we celebrated this past Sunday. This was the first day of the week where Jesus entered Jerusalem for the final time. Word spread quickly, and crowds began to gather to welcome Jesus into the city. All of the miracles of Jesus were leading up to this point in time.

John wrote this: “Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. That was the reason so many went out to meet him – because they had heard about this miraculous sign.” (John 12:17-18)

In John’s narrative, the raising of Lazarus was the decisive “sign” that caused the crowds to celebrate Jesus as the King of Israel while He approached and entered Jerusalem.

Also, Luke describes the entry, “As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.” (Luke 19:36-37)

Now, I don’t know if our new friends were in that crowd of people celebrating Jesus – I want to believe so, but we do know the crowd had heard the stories of all the miracles performed. It was an exciting moment in time!

But little did that crowd know that Friday was coming… After everything they all experienced, this miracle worker was to be crucified only five days later.

You and I get to read the Easter story with the insight of hindsight…but our friends in that crowd, they did not.

How do you think they felt on that Friday? After witnessing/hearing the death of their miracle worker?

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go... It seemed like all was lost, and disappointment and doubt came rushing in.

Have you ever been there?

Have you ever experienced a miracle for yourself or witnessed a miracle for someone else – and months, maybe years have passed, and it seems like a distant memory?

But now you’re facing a new trial, and you’re doubting God sees you this time around?

You’re not alone.

Think of the disciples, think of that crowd – those who experienced miracle after miracle with Jesus…now it was over. They didn’t understand.

Sometimes we don’t understand. Sometimes our faith is shaken.

But, remember Martha, Lazarus’ sister, who said to Jesus in her sorrow, “Yet, even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (John 11:22)

Even now will you have faith?

Even now, in the middle of your trial, will you remember our miraculous Jesus?

I want to hope that our new friends held on to their miracle as they waited for Jesus’ final and most powerful miracle of all – His resurrection. I want to encourage you to do the same.

Our lives as believers are contingent on the death and resurrection of Jesus. Everything changed after this miracle.

So, as we approach Easter, will you remember that you’re not alone? Will you trust God is moving in your situation even in the darkness, even in the confusion?

His resurrection power is there for you!

Check out his story in this Join the Story video. The following Blog post, in Question and Answer format, goes deeper into what the Lord has done in his life.

Q: What are some challenges you faced earlier in your life?
A: Growing up, I struggled with feelings of self-worth, impatience, anxiety and finding purpose. By the age of six, I had been through as many foster homes as I had years of life. I was in and out of foster care until I was adopted as a young teen.

Up until then, I was just trying to survive. I am thankful for my adoptive family and what they did for me. But even they couldn’t fill the void I felt, and there were still a variety of challenging family dynamics.

As a young adult, I joined the Marines, finally giving me the opportunity I’d dreamed of since I was a boy. I am forever grateful for the time I served, yet we faced many traumatic events that left a lasting impact. When I left the Marines, I wasn’t prepared for what lay ahead. Adjusting to life outside the military was a struggle. I lost my temper easily, was constantly irritated and paralyzed by fears.

I had a new family, but I started to lose control over my life, and I found solace in alcohol. Though I managed to keep a job, my nights were spent drinking until I passed out, only to wake up and repeat the cycle. I attempted suicide twice.

Q: You had a wake-up call. What was it?
A: This pattern persisted until one day while driving to State College for work, I stumbled upon the K-LOVE radio station after losing my usual station. God had already been working through my customers, planting seeds in my life, and this station was the sign I needed.

I heard a woman’s story about how she was ready to drive off a cliff until she found K-LOVE, which saved her. I thought, if God could save her, He could save me too. I prayed, asking God to turn my life around, promising to attend church if He did.

And He did – though it took me three months to fulfill my promise. Once again, God used the radio station to reach me. They talked about people making empty promises to God and how it’s never too late to turn to Him. That was my wake-up call.

Q: When did you go “all in” for Jesus?
A: In 2018, I dedicated my life to Jesus. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I went “all in” and became fully devoted to Him. Experiencing His grace and love, I felt complete. I finally knew what I’d been missing and wanted to share that love with others. For the past 2 ½ years, I’ve been attending CLA in person and feel the love and care of fellow believers.

Q: How do you find purpose?
A: I began serving in several areas at CLA because I want people to see that God loves them. I have found my purpose in the Lord and through serving others.

As a child, I remember standing in line for free food, and the kindness shown by the people who served us had a lasting impact. I’m honored to be able to volunteer behind the scenes at Breads Food Market and serve those facing challenging times.

As a veteran, the connection I’ve found through Out of the Trenches has been a staple in my walk with the Lord. It means so much to have a group of fellow veterans who have a common understanding of what we faced…all the while pointing our lives back to Jesus, finding purpose in Him and serving together.

I volunteer as a Buddy with Impact Kids, a ministry at CLA that matches an adult volunteer Buddy with a child who needs some extra support during our CLA Kids services. I love serving as a Buddy and seeing how far the child I’m matched with has come playing with other kids, sharing her toys and growing in her faith.

I also participated in the Christmas Wonderland drama for the first time last month. I was nervous, but the patience shown to me by my fellow cast as I learned was amazing. It was another example that showed me the grace I’d been missing for many years.

Q: How has God shown up in your life?
A: God has consistently shown up, which can be easy to take for granted. I’ve learned to be thankful and answer God’s call on my life. I know Jesus has always been with me and is always in control. He saved me from the darkest places when I was left to my own devices.

Today, I strive to show the love God has shown me in all I do, seeking ways to serve others just as Jesus has served us. I’m a work in progress, but He’s shown up for me in big and small ways. And I know He’s not done with me yet!

Pastor Shane has been encouraging us to hold onto these promises and to anchor our lives to them. He’s also encouraged us to memorize each of the key Scriptures.

Members of our team have shared Blog posts related to each promise. We pray these posts, along with video posts by Pastor Shane, have been meaningful to you as you reflect on the promises of God.

Below please find a summary of our promises from the second half of the year, key verses and just a few of our favorite highlights from the Blog posts.

To access the full posts, visit our Blog page.

December | God Promises to Give Us Wisdom
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” (James 1:5)

Erin Arva
I love this phrase from the first Blog post that kicked off our December promise: “Wisdom is not just about knowing facts; it’s about understanding how to live well and make decisions that please God.”

When I read this, I think of trying to look at a situation from the Lord’s perspective…what would please and honor Him…and not be focused solely on my own emotions, which, if left unchecked, can certainly lead me astray. We need the Lord’s wisdom for so many things, such as handling conflicts in relationships, setting priorities and healthy boundaries, parenting our kids, and the list goes on.

Dave Reed
I think it is really cool that the Creator of the universe wants to give us direction. Even with our stuff that we don’t want to share with anyone else. His intentions are not to condemn us, but to help us grow and become the best versions of ourselves, and to look more like His son when others see us. Begin by embracing the responsibility of what we know.

November | God Promises to Give Us Perfect Peace
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3)

Pastor Lee
I am aware that it is much easier to sing songs of praise when things are going well or during celebrations. How much easier is it to sing songs of worship during Sunday morning services when hundreds of people are singing alongside of you as we usher in the presence of God? The gift that comes with singing songs of praise to the Lord that is often missed is when we sing during times of hardship, grief or trouble.

Karin Baker
Building trust is a journey…an ongoing process of surrendering our fears, doubts and anxieties into the hands of a loving God. Again, this does not mean turning a blind eye to the realities of life nor denying the existence of challenges.
As I continue to reflect on this verse, I’m reminded of the countless times in my own life when steadfast trust has been my saving grace. In moments of doubt and even despair, it has been that unshakable, steadfast commitment to trust the Lord in all things that has gotten me through.

Cristen Crossley
Peace isn’t a wish granted automatically because we said “yes” to Jesus. Peace is a choice we make because we have said yes and choose to trust in Him and His ways! We have to choose to say, “I trust in You, no matter what!” I trust in You with my finances. I trust in You with my health. I trust in You with my child. I trust in You with my relationship. I trust in You with…

October | God Promises to Give Us Eternal Life
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Melissa Ball
His promise is for you too. It can be the anchor in your life when you feel like everything is shifting and changing. If you are feeling scattered or your life is chaotic, know that God is with you, and His promise of eternal life is for you too. He loves you so much that He sent His only son so that you can have eternal life with Him. All for you. All for me.

Pastor Denny
Aren’t you glad that John 3:16 IS true? God DID love the world, and that means God loves YOU. God DID give His Son to die for your sins. The blood He shed on the cross is the only thing that can save you from your sins. God meant WHOSOEVER. That means young and old; smart or average; educated and not; lower class to upper class; wicked sinners like that thief on the cross with Jesus, and sinners like Nicodemus, who was religious and moral and sincere and earnest. And God’s offer of salvation IS BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH ALONE. Not your church, or your religion, or your works, or how much good you have done will ever bring you eternal life.

September | God Promises That Nothing Can Separate Us from His Presence
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Sydney Wilson
Be encouraged today; if you are not raising the dead or seeing God move mountains in your life, you are still within His presence. He is always with you, in the big and in the small. He is always working, even if it's mundane. He cares for you, and that means every small detail. So today, if you are struggling to see Him and His presence, know that He is in all things at all times for all people.

Pastor Dan
I can’t imagine being in a place where I would regularly feel unprotected, vulnerable, separated. I know there are people in this world who aren’t as fortunate, who don’t have many of the comforts and securities that I enjoy.
But I thank God for His promise that, no matter where I go or what I do, nothing can separate me from His love. Nothing. If I cross the oceans, He is there. If I am in the middle of the valley, He is there. If I climb the highest mountain or dive deep into the sea, He is there. Nothing can separate me from the love, protection, safety, comfort and blessings of God!

Pastor Katie
There is a stream near our house and, when it rains, the stream is so powerful that it moves anything in its path. My son, Lincoln, likes to throw sticks in the stream when it gets this way. The flow is so strong that the sticks are swept down the stream. This is how I picture God’s love – when things get thrown my way and convince me I’m unloved, I let God’s truth, His mighty love, wash it away. Life will throw us many things, but let those sticks keep coming because they will never stop the powerful, sweeping, ever-flowing love of our mighty God.

August | God Promises to Give Us Power in Times of Weakness
“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Jamey McClintock
Many times, when hardships come, our world is quick to blame God. Are we just as quick to give Him credit when good things happen? Or do we take the credit for the good? When we question God’s character and love for us, it makes it even more difficult for us to depend on Him.

Paul’s dependence on God made him so much stronger than he ever would have been without those trials. Maybe the reason we don’t experience God’s power is because we have avoided the things He sent to strengthen us.

Pastor David
When we feel burdened by the weight of our circumstances – whatever they might be – He invites us to cast our cares on Him and find rest. Plugging into Jesus as our power source during times of weakness allows us to release our worries and cares to Him. In Him, we can find the strength to keep going.

Ask Yourself: Will This Honor the Lord?

We need God’s wisdom in all areas of our lives…from major life decisions to day-to-day ones. Thankfully, as it says in James 1:5, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” No matter what you’re facing today, pause, take a breath and ask the Lord for guidance. He is ready to help us understand things better and make good choices.

And they certainly do.

But wisdom is also needed in the day-to-day moments…even hour-by-hour moments.

Speaking of parenting, when our boys were younger, I heard this phrase: “Practice the pause.” I can’t remember where I first heard this, but I think it’s so good for so many areas of life…from talking to a child about thinking before they speak…to reminding myself to take a few moments before responding to a certain situation.

Here are just a few of the wonderful verses about godly wisdom:

Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. It’s one of those statements that’s stuck with me over the years. I started thinking, “Seriously, is that true? How much do I truly know?”

I had a grandmother who read me Bible stories throughout my life. I lived at Northwest Bible College in Minot, ND from the ages of 5 to 7. On Sunday mornings, as a child, I’d sit in the pews of Riddlesburg Church of God, doodling while listening to the pastor deliver sermons.

Most recently, I had spent the last year of my life at Celebrate Recovery, retooling my thought patterns to stay sober. I had definitely acquired a lot of knowledge.

Then, we had a lesson about Step 12.

Having had a spiritual experience as a result of these steps, we tried to share this message with others and practice these principles in all our affairs.

It certainly sounded like this was asking me to move from being a “pewer” and step out of my comfort zone to becoming a “doer.” But first, what does that look like, and who will listen to me? I felt dirty and wretched. I had a year or so of sobriety under my belt, but it’s the pastor’s job to tell people about Jesus. They’re the experts, right?

“But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.” (Luke 12:48 NLT)

I’d read somewhere that accumulating information from sources like books, the internet or mentors is called knowledge. And applying that knowledge is wisdom. I knew that in my addiction, the enemy allowed me to do a lot of things. I just wanted to do the things the Bible promised.

Now, I understood that much was required because God had been helping me clean up the messes I had created, and who wouldn’t want some of that?

So, how do I muster up the courage to take this knowledge and apply it?

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5 NIV)

Think About It: What is troubling you? What areas do you need more wisdom in your life?

Pray: Prayer is just talking with God. Even with our stuff that we don’t want to share with anyone else. His intentions are not to condemn us, but to help us grow and become the best versions of ourselves, and to look more like His son when others see us. Begin by embracing the responsibility of what we know.

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, thank You so much for the opportunity and the willingness to come to You. Lord, this world is crazy sometimes, and I pray that, before I get overwhelmed with life, I seek Your counsel because You promise to give us wisdom in any situation that we come to You with. He is a wonderful Gospel singer and has blessed us numerous times at CLA with his vocal talents. He wrote a song about a man who has an awful voice, but who desperately wants to sing in the church choir. Year after year, he is turned down until one Sunday when they find out he was accepted into the choir in Heaven. It is a fantastic song, and I love hearing Randy sing it.

The sad truth is that I can relate to it! In my 53 years, I have never had anyone say to me, “You have a fantastic singing voice!” And I probably never will, but I do love to sing. I believe music is a gift God has given to us and, if performed with the right heart, helps us get closer to Him, particularly when we sing songs of praise.

The entirety of Isaiah 36 is “A Song of Praise to the Lord.” Psalms 95, 96 and 147 talk about singing to the Lord. Colossians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:18-19 also discuss singing to the Lord. When we sing with “grace in [our] hearts to the Lord,” all the pretense, all the walls come down and enable us to be closer with Him, allowing His presence to be with us in such a deeper, more personal way.

Isaiah 26:3 is a song of praise, but it is also a promise from God to give us His peace. When do we need peace in our lives? “Always” is the right answer, but we find the need for His peace even more during the storms of life.

When we trust in the Lord completely and keep our eyes focused on Him, even during those seasons on need, His peace will break through the darkest storms and the violent seas…but we must trust Him without doubt or questioning His goodness or sense of justice.

I can write this to you because I have found Isaiah 26:3 to be true. Despite my lack of giftings in the vocal arena, when I open my heart and sing songs of praise to my Lord during even the most horrific trials, I am graced with His presence and given His “perfect peace.”

So, allow me to encourage you today. If the storms of life are raging, and you are feeling overwhelmed or tossed around, sing! Trust the Lord! And praise Him with all your heart and see if He doesn’t calm the storms and give you His “perfect peace” too.

Verse to Memorize

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3)

Pursue the Promises

Throughout 2024, every Monday morning by 7:00 AM, we will post a new video from Pastor Shane or an article written by a member of our staff that connects to that month's featured promise. Learn more.

Yet, even in the craziness of life, there’s a promise that speaks through the ages – a promise of perfect peace.

Isaiah 26:3 sums up this divine confidence so beautifully, offering comfort and hope to all who seek it: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.”

What does it mean to have “perfect peace?” As I reflect on my own journey, I have come to realize that my craving for peace runs deep within me, shaping the very fabric of my daily life.

For me, peace isn’t the absence of external distractions, nor the avoidance of conflict. Instead, it is something far more profound – an inner peace that remains steadfast in life’s most difficult storms.

I have been a little obsessed with the word STEADFAST. Isaiah says, “whose minds are STEADFAST because they trust in you.”

Steadfastness, in its nature, is more than a fleeting emotion or momentary commitment. I start most days with praise and worship. Giving thanks for what I have and what He has spared me from. Surrendering control to the Lord for the things I am holding too tightly to. I do have days where I start to tell the Lord how things should go though.

Deepen Trust: Embrace each moment of my life as an opportunity to lean more into the Lord’s unfailing love for me. How can we have peace when people are mean to each other, when my finances are a wreck or when there is a health crisis?

Do we get confused because we often read Scripture through a human lens instead of what God intends? In Isaiah 26:3, God’s Word does promise “perfect peace” and that can feel amazing or confusing when we read that Scripture out of context.

As Christians, it is important for us to read and share Scripture as it was intended, in the context of the surrounding Scripture verses, the chapter it is in and even the totality of the book of the Bible. When we look at God’s Word as a complete package, we gain a better understanding of what He is trying to share with us. It offers us comfort and hope in times of stress and uncertainty. In Isaiah 26:3, it says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

This verse emphasizes the relationship between our thoughts, our trust in God and the peace He provides. When we fix our minds on Him, we can experience a peace that transcends our circumstances, no matter what they might be. This perfect peace is not an absence of conflict, but rather a deep and abiding promise that God is in control.

In Philippians 4:6-7, we are encouraged to not be anxious but rather present our requests to God in prayer.
The Difference One Word Can Make

Likely each of us has gone through times where, while we know the Lord sees us, we don’t fully feel it. In this week’s Blog post, Erin Arva recaps a powerful story from a recent Sunday service that reinforces two things – the Lord does see you, and Jesus died and rose again for you to live life to the fullest. The promise of eternal life in John 3:16 should impact how we live today.

I pondered for a while what I could write that hasn’t already been said. Also, I wasn’t sure I could do this verse justice.

As I studied this verse more – and after reading what Pastor Matt, Pastor Denny and Melissa Ball shared about this verse in their Blogs this month – I felt compelled what to share.

In the past, when I’ve heard or read this verse, I usually focused on what the Lord did for me…for us. He died for our sins so we, as believers, could have eternal life with Him.

And of course – this is absolutely amazing and foundational to our faith.

Yet I hadn’t really pondered Pastor Matt’s point that the truth in this verse should impact how we live every day because of what Jesus did for us.

Do you know the Lord sees you right now?

A story that guest speaker Tim Enloe shared this past Sunday really drove this point home. His message was titled Understanding His Presence.

At the end of his message, Tim shared a story about a time he was preaching at a church and felt compelled to say the word “yellow.” He felt strange saying it and even apologized to the pastor afterward. The pastor agreed it was a bit odd to say, but they moved on.

After the service, Tim was talking to a mom with a daughter with significant special needs. The mom had been feeling discouraged and quite defeated, and she had been questioning if the Lord even saw and knew her daughter.

At that moment, Tim said the word “yellow,” which happened to be her daughter’s favorite color. This seemingly random word actually meant so much. And it wasn’t random, was it? The Lord shared that word with Tim who was obedient in saying it, which blessed and encouraged this mom so much.

No matter what you’re facing, remember that the God of the universe is aware of every aspect of your life and cares deeply about you. Even if you’re facing something that’s made you question this truth, I hope the story of the word “yellow” will encourage you like it did me.

Which brings me to another quick story. I was at a conference for church leaders earlier this week, and one of the speakers, a local pastor, shared that he’d gone through a period of time earlier this year where he was just trying to make it through. His heart was heavy with the weight of a number of things but, in the midst of it, he was reminded that God didn’t give His one and only Son for us as believers to just “get by.”

Yes, we may face challenging times, but the Lord wants for us to thrive…not live stressed and downtrodden.

As John 10:10 says, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

The Lord loves you, sees you and wants you to live life to the fullest in Him!

Verse to Memorize

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Pursue the Promises

Throughout 2024, every Monday morning by 7:00 AM, we will post a new video from Pastor Shane or an article written by a member of our staff that connects to that month's featured promise. Learn more.

What if this precious jewel in the coffers of God’s Word was not true?

For instance…

1. WHAT IF GOD HAD NOT LOVED THE WORLD? The verse begins, “For God so loved the world…” Without God’s love, there would be no hope at all in this world. Roger Campbell said, “If God had not loved the world, our world would be a dark planet hurtling through space without hope. There would be nothing to live for and no purpose for existence.”

But, praise God, I want to tell you that God DOES love the world: Everything speaks of God’s love to humanity. Every sunrise; every blade of grass; every fountain of water; every birth; the face of every child – ALL speak of and are evidence of the love of God. But the GREATEST demonstration of God’s love is the cross, which makes me think…

2. WHAT IF GOD HAD NOT GIVEN HIS SON? The verse goes on to say, “…that he gave His only begotten Son…” What if, instead of God giving us His Son, He gave us what we deserve; and instead of sending His Son to die for our sins, and giving us the opportunity to have a life on Earth worth living and eternal life forever, He just sent us all to hell? Life would be a meaningless existence.

3. WHAT IF GOD’S OFFER OF SALVATION WERE NOT FOR THE “WHOSOEVERS”? Look again at what Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:16, “…that whosoever believeth in him…” What a comforting word it is! It’s a word that is general, yet particular. It embraces all of humanity, and yet it touches each and every one of us. It means the Gospel is for EVERYONE, which means it’s for YOU and for ME!

4. WHAT IF GOD’S OFFER WERE NOT BASED ON FAITH ALONE? “…that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

On the cross in the middle is Jesus Christ, the sinless Lamb of God dying for the sins of everyone, including the two thieves there with Jesus, one on each side of Him. One of them mocked Jesus, but the other said to Jesus in faith, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” (Luke 23:42)

This was a thief, a sinner, a man of dishonesty, fraud, deception and vice, and it’s doubtful that he ever lived a good life, consistently tried to obey the commandments of God, or do good deeds for the poor. “And Jesus replied, ‘I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.’” (Luke 23:43)

The dying thief was given the promise of eternal life with Jesus on the basis of only one thing – FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST who paid his sin penalty in his place.

Aren’t you glad that John 3:16 IS true?

God DID love the world, and that means God loves YOU. If you were the only person on earth, God would have sent Jesus to die just for you. That’s how much He loves you!

God DID give His Son to die for your sins. The blood He shed on the cross is the only thing that can save you from your sins. Jesus was your substitute who paid the penalty for sin that you deserved to pay.

God meant WHOSOEVER. That means young and old; smart or average; educated and not; lower class to upper class; wicked sinners like that thief on the cross with Jesus, and sinners like Nicodemus, who was religious and moral and sincere and earnest. This covers all mankind!

And God’s offer of salvation IS BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH ALONE. Not your church, or your religion, or your works, or how much good you have done will ever bring you eternal life. Will you just simply come as you are and “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved?”

Learn more.

Check out today’s post, which is a video by Pastor Matt that shows why we should be focused on the eternal and today. God’s promise to give us eternal life is amazing; it is perhaps one of the most significant and well known promises in the Bible. Yet it also has meaning for how we should live right now, today. In this video, Pastor Matt shares a personal story that can serve as a great example of this.

Growing up as a pastor's kid automatically gave me a front row seat to what the Lord was doing in countless people’s lives.

I grew up hearing your stories and watching as God provided in your lives. I spent so much of my childhood wondering how people could be so full of faith to see God move in ways like that...to sense His presence fully. The older I got, and the more I made my relationship my own with the Lord, the more I thought I understood what God’s presence looked like.

When the Lord called me to the mission field, I began to see, hear and do things that I had only read about in the New Testament.

I watched as we would not have enough food for our feeding programs, and the Lord would miraculously multiply what we did have so that no children would go hungry. I watched as we prayed for people that demons would leave their bodies, and deliverance came so profoundly. In my time on the mission field, I witnessed thousands of salvations that could only be explained by the presence of God.

Seeing and sitting in the presence of God was normal to me until I found myself following God into a new adventure, leaving my life as a missionary, and coming home. I remember my first week back; I immediately noticed there was a shift.

I felt the Lord grow quiet, and, for the first time in my life, I began to ask God a lot of hard questions. I spent months wondering where the Lord had gone, wondering what I had done to cause His absence, and if God only existed in my sacrifice.

What happens when that feeling isn’t as easy anymore? What happens when religion and relationship with Him suddenly feel like work rather than joy? I tried to rationalize God, when really, I think He was trying to rationalize Himself to me.

I think we have all faced seasons where we cannot hear the Lord, where this idea of His presence never leaving us doesn’t feel real. Seasons where it’s easy to look at people who are walking so closely beside God and you feel miles away. I know I have gone from excitement about what the Lord was doing to wondering why He was quiet. I know I have suffered and waited for God to move in my situations when the person who sat next to me on Sunday received healing.

This month’s promise is one of the hardest to comprehend, but one of the most important to hide deep within your heart. His presence is not always intensity and healing, and all these things we make it out to be. I believe the Lord had to draw me away from seeing His presence displayed one way so that I could learn about all the other ways He chooses to reveal Himself.

Sometimes His presence is an encouraging lunch with friends.

Sometimes His presence is Him helping you get through another day.

Sometimes His presence is your favorite meal.

Verse to Memorize

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. I have been on many missions trips over the years; however, this was the first time that she and I were able to participate together.

There is something that happens when you leave the comforts of home to serve others; when you temporarily walk away from the things that help you to feel secure and have a sense of well-being; when you put yourself “out there.” There is a vulnerability when you are away from the things that help you feel safe and loved.

As I reflect on this perspective, I am reminded that we all tend to gravitate back to that place of security – of home – the place we belong. The place where we feel the love of family and friends. God never meant for us to feel isolated.

The Bible tells us in I Peter 5:8 that the enemy of our souls, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. What a word picture! Can you imagine being somewhere without any protection, knowing that there is a hungry lion seeking you as prey?

After a week of working in a medical clinic in Tanzania, we spent a few hours on a safari. It was my first time being out in open space with dangerous animals. Toward the end of our tour, the tire on our jeep fell off and was rolling next to us. We came to an immediate stop out in the middle of this animal reserve.

As our guide was assessing any potential damage to the vehicle, I started walking down the road to see if I could find any of the lug nuts that fell off (I found two!). After distancing myself from the group as I was searching for the illusive lug nuts, I realized that I was in an unprotected area with wild animals. I was separating myself from the safety of others. I felt a quick chill run down my spine when I realized this and hurriedly walked back to the jeep. Unharmed. Safe.

Verse to Memorize

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. One day I will have to try it out, and maybe you and I can swap stories. But until then, I’ll just stick to the idea.

The idea of a rushing river, the force, the rapids, all these things make me think of God’s love for His Church. I mean, think of it, this powerful, sweeping, flowing – ever-rushing love! It’s simply breathtaking.

Our verse for this month’s promise is Romans 8:38-39:

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If we think of God’s love like a rushing river, Paul here is telling the church in Rome that essentially nothing can block God’s love from flowing down to us…he even names a few things the enemy tries to use – death, life, angels, rulers, present things, future things, powers, depth, height or all of creation….

The enemy is subtle and whispers to us that we are unloved. He convinces us that we’ve done this or that, we’ve not done enough of this or that, and we’re not worth being loved.

Earlier in Romans 8:28, Paul talks about how God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose for them.

So, that means our past failures, our present problems and our anxiety of the future – God takes those things and flows through them to work for our good. Any attempt to block God’s love is completely and totally unsuccessful.

God doesn’t necessarily remove those things from our lives…the mistakes of our past haunt us, we will face temptation and struggles, and our thoughts sometimes will get the best of us…but, in spite of all these things, God loves us, and none of those things can nor will ever prevent God’s love flowing to us. And, if we allow Him, He turns our painful moments into purpose for His glory.

Action steps:

Recognize the lies the enemy whispers in your ear, and then find Scripture that combats those lies with truth. Call them out and give them to God. Allow His love to wash over you and the problems you’re facing.

Memorize this month’s verse (Romans 8:38-39) and say it out loud when you begin to doubt God’s love for you.

Pray. Now that you’ve received this amazing love, pray and ask God how you can show and share His love with those closest to you.

Verse to Memorize

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Supernatural Strength

In today’s Blog post, Jamey McClintock shares some thought-provoking questions about hardships and God’s goodness. For example, what is our first reaction when trials come our way? Do we blame God? And might we be missing out on God’s power because we avoid the things He’s sent to strengthen us? Such good insight here!

Do you want your strength and power, or God’s?

In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Paul makes some bold statements. He says things like, “I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me,” and “I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.”

Is that your first instinct as a believer – to boast about your weakness and delight in difficult things?

These statements are countercultural. Most of us are more inclined to avoid anything that shows our weakness and complain about things that are difficult. Yet, I wonder how many times we have missed out on opportunities for growth in our relationship with the Lord because of our desire to make life easier.

Paul had a thriving ministry where many were saved. He had a deep connection with God and revelation that not many in the Bible experienced. Yet, the cost of that was high. He had a “thorn in his flesh” that, although God had the power to remove, He did not do so. Paul faced many trials throughout his life, physical hardships, criticism, betrayal and so much more.

Paul’s life was far from easy. Yet he did not question God’s goodness. Can you say the same?

Many times, when hardships come, our world is quick to blame God. Are we just as quick to give Him credit when good things happen? Or do we take the credit for the good? When we question God’s character and love for us, it makes it even more difficult for us to depend on Him.

Paul’s dependence on God made him so much stronger than he ever would have been without those trials. Maybe the reason we don’t experience God’s power is because we have avoided the things He sent to strengthen us.

Do you want your strength and power, or His? When we confess our weakness, it is then that we operate in God’s power. There is never a time in our life where we outgrow God. We always need Him whether we acknowledge it or not.

Paul could have been upset with God, disappointed that not everything turned out the way he hoped, frustrated when times were tough, disillusioned when people weren’t obedient, and just quit on many occasions. Yet, he remained faithful, was fully surrendered to Christ’s plan, and recognized that it was in Christ’s presence that he could find rest to recharge and continue without growing weary.

To experience God’s power to the fullest, we need to trust God completely, run to Him when times are tough, surrender our plan and confess our dependence on Him. Rejoicing in today, no matter how challenging, will produce peace, joy and hope that can only come from God.

Our Savior loves us in ways too magnificent for us to understand with our finite minds. However, doing life like Paul did will result in some supernatural strength that is made perfect in your weakest moments. Do you trust God enough to give it a try?

Verse to Memorize

“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. We need power for our cars, we need power to heat and cool our homes, and we even need power for our computers and phones…among many other things.

Which got me thinking. Similar to how so many amenities of modern life need power, so too do we need power to adequately function. Yet this power that I’m referring to for us is Jesus.

He is our sustaining power to help us get through every day. Whether things are going well in our lives, or if we find ourselves in a challenging time, He helps us, is with us and cares so deeply about us.

He is the power that we need to get through each and every day.

Plugging into Jesus as our “power source” is so important for finding strength, comfort and renewal. When we feel overwhelmed or discouraged, we can turn to Jesus. He promises that His power and love will sustain us.

Furthermore, Jesus offers us a source of strength that goes beyond our own limitations and abilities. (Can I get an “Amen”?) When we feel inadequate, He reminds us that His strength is made perfect in our weakness, as we read in the verses (2 Corinthians 12:9-10) for this month’s promise. By leaning on Him, we can find the courage to keep going, one step at a time, through life’s ups and downs.

When we feel burdened by the weight of our circumstances – whatever they might be – He invites us to cast our cares on Him and find rest. Plugging into Jesus as our power source during times of weakness allows us to release our worries and cares to Him. In Him, we can find the strength to keep going.

I am so thankful for another promise – that He will never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He is our ever-present help. As we’ve been reminded every week throughout our Pursue the Promises theme, we can count on the Lord, His Word and His faithfulness.

By staying connected to Him by reading the Bible and through prayer, worship and fellowship with other believers, we can find the encouragement and support we need to navigate life's challenges. As we plug into Jesus as our source of power, our relationship with Him is deepened, which ultimately has a positive impact on all areas of our lives.

Verse to Memorize

“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. Little ones to Him belong; they are weak, but He is strong…

This is a song that I heard in the nursery growing up, but what does it mean to just lay it down and trust Him when you don’t have a logical next step, or when all hope seems lost? What are some practical ways to put that into action?
I’d like to share how this has worked in my life.
In my struggles with my mental health, I was missing out on life, specifically what I felt God was calling me to. It was so hard for me to even get out of bed most days during that time.

How was I going to help people walk out their recovery walk, when I could not even think of a way to take steps out of my front door, due to fear and uncertainty? For the majority of my life, everything that I had done had been predicated on a “hustle” mentality. I was burning the candle at both ends, and the future did not look like that was a possibility…the candles had burned out.

It has been my experience that God uses what seems to be your weakest moments to propel you to the next chapter in His plan and purpose in your life.

In a short amount of time, I was able to allow God to do a work in me that is truly remarkable…some would argue it was a miracle. I personally think that is a stretch, but how did God give me the strength and motivation to take steps forward…most importantly out my door…and then build on that daily? Here are three takeaways.

Pray - This is sadly usually the last resort. We as believers usually pray; however, we pray after we have done everything that we can do in our own strength. In Matthew 6:33, it says seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Go to Him, talk with Him and invite Him into your situation.

Listen - I spend a ton of time telling God what my next steps are, and sometimes I picture Him looking at me, shaking His head and saying… “Are you done yet?” I have historically been terrible at this. I’ve wanted my relationship with God to be very transactional. However, I have learned over time that this isn’t how He tends to work. We must lean in and listen. I also try to write in my journal what I feel God is speaking to me at the time and what the next steps are in my situation that I am struggling with. Pausing to write has been a very important way for me to allow the Lord to work in my life.

Act - What if we truly walked out the Scriptures that look good on a t-shirt or bumper sticker, such as Matthew 19:26…with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. In the recovery world, we say “do the next right thing.” Taking baby steps has been my experience. Small applicable steps in the right direction allow roots to take hold, grow and build a strong foundation rooted in Him.

I am not sure what you might be walking through right now. It could be something as small as what cereal to buy, or it could be some huge life-altering situation that you just don’t know what to do with. Give them to God and let His strength shine in these moments. I know that this is counterculture but remember another promise from Scripture in Matthew 11:28-29…

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Verse to Memorize

“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need.
